Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
