Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
